Continuing education is evolving at
Net speed ...
|
|
For a busy executive who spends
a lot of time on the road much as he'd like to hone his managerial
skills in school, he is hard-pressed to free up a couple of nights
each week for class. His answer: the Internet and an online
e-Learning course. He can set his own pace, and show up to class in
his own time. He can spend five minutes in class, or two
hours.
While conventional students haul
themselves off to classrooms to meet face-to-face with professors,
this busy Executive, labors by laptop. He dials in to his program
from his kitchen table, or from hotel rooms across the country. He
downloads lectures, submits papers, joins in student discussions,
and even gets his grades over the Net. He puts in 20 hours a week
online.

| The e-learning
revolution |
|
| Learning is an ongoing
process, not just a training class ... |

e-Learning must be more than a shift in
semantics for some companies that are discovering that training,
loosely defined as any enhancement to an employee's skills delivered
in a classroom by an instructor, is becoming an antiquated way of
looking at how employees acquire knowledge and build
skills.
Clark Aldrich, an analyst at the Gartner Group
consultancy, says corporate training efforts in the past were
ad-hoc. Training in a classroom is often delivered "just-in-case,"
while e-learning via the Web or CD-ROM is delivered "just-in-time,"
Aldrich says.
Moreover, he says training has not been
systematic. Typically there's little correlation between who needs
training and who gets trained. Under the traditional system,
"training becomes a way to perpetuate, in some cases, bad habits
and, in most cases, old habits," says Aldrich.

What's the "e" in e-Learning?
|
|
by Eric Parks, Ph.D, President & CEO, ASK International
Has anyone defined what the letter "e" in e-learning stands for? I have asked some colleagues. They tell me it refers to "enterprise", while others say it refers to "electronic" like electronic mail. I have my own opinions about the "e" in e-learning. I
feel that the "e" represents how we will increasingly acquire, store and disseminate knowledge.
